Anyone out there complete a Freeway SA mod?

Postby wirelessdreamer on Mon Jul 26, 2010 9:44 am

I'm seriously considering buying a Freeway SA. First background on what i'll be using it with:

I plan on running the Freeway sa into a Roland US-20, then spitting it out to a vg-99, and axon ax-100 with a fantom xr for sounds.

There are 2 things that keep it from being the perfect guitar in my book:

1. rosewood fingerboard, godin's lgxt, xtsa, and lgx-sa all have ebony fingerboards, and mention ebony has better tracking then rosewood, Ideally I'd like to see proof to this.

2. I'd like to have a 3 voice guitar, the freeway has ghost pickups, so modding in the acoustic pickup module should be trivial

I've been playing Strats for 15 years, so changing to a Les Paul body style would feel strange, so I'd like to go with the Freeway SA, instead of one of godin's 3 voice ebony models, and upgrade the freeway sa. I'm hoping to find someone that has already gone this route, to see what snags they hit

Hi,

Freeway Frank here. I use my Freeway SA with an old Roland GR-1. It tracks great. I had a Roland Ready Strat previously, but the Freeway does a much better job. Briefly, what I did was to wire in (solder) a 250k linear pot and an on/off switch to the "PVO" and the "PVI" terminals on the Ghost circuit board. This provided "raw" acoustic voice to the guitar. Graphtech has info how to do this. There also is a way (much more difficult) to wire in a special acoustic board Graphtech sells, not the regular "plug in" board. This is because the "Hexpander" board that comes with the Freeway is different from the board Graphtech sells to the public. The "raw" voice I referred to has no EQ. You take care of that with your amp/PA. Also, the acoustic voice is run through the 13 pin cable meaning you have to be connected to your synth. Godin's 3 voice models provide a 1/4" jack for acoustic voice, but with the Freeway, the acoustic voice runs through the 13 pin cable. Still, I was able to get acoustic voice, and split the humbuckers with a switch for about $20.

I checked out the XTSA before I purchased my Freeway, but the Freeway's maple neck (thinner than the mahogany necks on the XT models) is what sold me. The Freeway SA is a great player. Hope this helps.
